Magic in Combat

While magic can be a boon in combat, it can also be a hindrance. It must be acknowledged that its benefits cannot be ignored. But the fact is that it complicates far more than it benefits.
For example, in a siege situation you would have a defending force in an easily defensible position and an attacking force attempting to overwhelm the defending position therefore winning initiative and most likely the battle. But in doing so, the attacking force would be heavily taxed in terms of numbers and resources. So lets add magic to the attacking force. The defences are removed or made not so defend able and the attacking force achieves its objective with minimal fuss. Now imagine if the defending force is able to utilise magic as well. It degenerates into a magical contest to see who can remove the others magical advantage fastest.
Now, such a contest will typically be decided by skill and as such would be decided in a quick[ish] fashion. However, the more magicians added to the mix (on both sides), the more complicated the flavour. As someone tires, another takes up the slack and so on. This kind of battle can be lethal to the practitioners and to the mundane forces, as energy not contained can have unpredictable effects.
A battlefield could become imbued with alot of background magic making mundane existence 'difficult'. Strange elemental effects could happen for limited periods of time. And the tainting of the practitioners could also occur as alot of magic handling can have disastrous ramifications (the mundane saying that magic has a price is not without some truth), especially if the user is casting at strength greater than their own over extended periods. Though these effects would require alot of magic use to occur, there have been documented cases.

So in conclusion, magic can be useful but can also be a hindrance in combat. So I suppose that it could be said magic doesn't win. But then again... It all comes down to who's using the magic doesn't it. Ultimately, magic in combat revolves around the initiative and skill of the user.

  1. Dorc been in lots of wars with magickey cunts, and always the same problem. . . EGO. Magickey cunts have big ego and want to beat other magickey cunts, that why in war, they never as good as could be. When I fighting gay pa-la-din, i no trying to hit his shield or armor, I try to hit weakest spot where do most damage, that what magickey cunts SHOULD do in war. Use powers against mund...mundi...mundei...no magickey cunts. You can wipe out whole legion of fighters with one spell if you ignore other magickey cunts, do damage where it does the most. Dont try spelling gainst each others, kill normal soldiers as fast as possible first, then wory about magickey cunts. But thy EGO always get in way and they want to prove who got biggest balls, easy, i have . . . in my ball bag, where I keep all the balls I have chopped off magickey cunts!

  2. Actually Dead Dorc. If I'm there, then the other magic user(s) wouldn't be able to defend against me for long. So Ultimately, I win.
