Shamanic notes... Thaumaturgy.

Thaumaturgy is the practice of enchanting by use of magical entities and mechanical implements. It is vulgar to most "sophisticated" magic users as it can bypass the ritual phase altogether. This is because there is no need to fortify the practitioners energy levels as the entities take the strain. It's practice is the lot of Shamans, witches and Summoners. With the emphasis on Shamans.

The Shaman has little need or desire for ritual (as we know it) because their understanding of magic is alot less complicated than that of a Wizard or Mage. They effect reality mostly through a mindset akin to that of a summoner with psychological limitations. These limits stem from their smaller perspective, come knowledge of the world around them (which mirrors our own understanding, to a degree).

As the name suggests a Shaman is a tribal magic user with little formal knowledge. The setting obviously having an effect on the limits in play for this practitioner. The funny thing though is that while the Shaman has little understanding of the world outside its perceptions, if its knowledge (of magical theory) increases, its magical potential diminishes. So if the Shaman leaves its environs, its potential lessens the more it comes to grasp its own existence. This may explain the Orc Shaman phenomenon and the like.
